Product Marketing vs. Marketing

What's the difference between Product Marketing and Marketing?

One of the biggest misconceptions I see in growing software companies is that marketing and product marketing are the same thing.

They're not.

I've worked with organizations that invested heavily in demand generation—ads, content, webinars, events, SEO, paid search—and still struggled to grow. The problem wasn't that marketing wasn't working. It was that buyers couldn't quickly understand why the product mattered or why it was better than the alternatives.

That's where product marketing comes in.

Marketing creates awareness. It gets people to notice you and brings prospects into the funnel.

Product marketing gives those prospects a reason to choose you.

My job has always been to bridge the gap between what a product does and why customers should care. That means defining positioning, sharpening messaging, launching new products, enabling sales teams, analyzing competitors, and making sure customers understand the value they're buying—not just the features they're getting.

A simple way to think about it is this:

Marketing gets attention.
Product marketing earns trust.

When those two functions work together, great things happen. Marketing campaigns perform better because the message is clearer. Sales conversations become more focused because reps know how to tell the story. Product launches generate momentum instead of confusion. Customers adopt faster because they understand the value from day one.

Throughout my career—from Fortune 500 companies to fast-growing SaaS organizations—I've found that every successful go-to-market strategy starts by answering four simple questions:

  • Why should I care?

  • Why is this different?

  • Why should I believe you?

  • Why should I buy now?

If those answers aren't obvious, no amount of advertising or demand generation will fix the problem.

That's why I often tell founders that product marketing isn't just another marketing function. It's the strategic layer that makes every other marketing investment work harder.

Marketing fills the pipeline.

Product marketing helps turn that pipeline into revenue.
